Review: This Side of the Grave (A Night Huntress Novel) By Jeaniene Frost

This Side of the grave is the 5th novel of the Night Huntress Series, so keep in mind that this review is going to be a little spoilery about what happened in previews books of the series, and I think that if you haven’t read the previous instalments, this book isn’t for you because you’re gonna get lost, go and find the first book and read the series in order.

With this book I wasn’t expecting anything extraordinary because for me the series had met its end in Destined for an Early Grave; however Jeaniene Frost gave me a huge surprise delivering an interesting new plot with our well-know characters and a delightful sense of humor.

Oh, the joys of married life! Cat and Bones (the joyful and extremely sexy married couple) are dealing with the problems of Cat’s transformation, and the new powers that entailed. These so-called powers are the ones that brought a conflict between vampires and ghouls, which ultimately could led to a war (a war with great cost for both parts – and to humankind). Everything begins when Cat and Bones start investigating the disappearance of vampires in Cat’s home town. The things that they discovered there, force them to make new alliances and pay a visit to the enigmatic Queen of New Orleans, Marie Laveau. She, in her own way, gives them some answers, and more problems too.

In This Side of The Grave we get to see really funny moments between Cat, Bones and others when she is training to manage her powers; those moments are delivered perfectly by Frost and leave you wanting more! Bones *sigh*, is not only sexy -did I mention how gorgeous he is-, dedicated and completely in love with Cat, but he is still the deadly master vampire of the first books. Love has changed him, but only with Cat, the rest of the world has to be wary of him –and never ask him if he sparkles-.The other characters from previous books (Denise, Spade, Mercheres, Vlad, Don, her old team members, her Mom) have important roles in the plot and make it more enjoyable, because yes, sometimes the plot doesn’t   “catches” you like it did in the others books.

I really enjoyed this book; it has a set of steamy scenes, has action, and is still true with the characters. It’s not my favourite of the series (that place belongs to At Grave's End) but is a fun story that will keep you entertained and waiting for the next instalment.

Synopsis

Danger waits on both sides of the grave.
Half-vampire Cat Crawfield and her vampire husband Bones have fought for their lives, as well as for their relationship. But just when they've triumphed over the latest battle, Cat's new and unexpected abilities threaten to upset a long-standing balance . . .
With the mysterious disappearance of vampires, rumors abound that a species war is brewing. A zealot is inciting tensions between the vampires and ghouls, and if these two powerful groups clash, innocent mortals could become collateral damage. Now Cat and Bones are forced to seek help from a dangerous "ally"—the ghoul queen of New Orleans herself. But the price of her assistance may prove more treacherous than even the threat of a supernatural war . . . to say nothing of the repercussions Cat never imagined

  1. Great review! It wasn't my favourite either, but I still really enjoyed it. Plus, I had gone sooo long without my Cat & Bones dose, that it was a perfect reunion. :)

Thanks for following me! I'm following you too. Real good blog. :)

  2. Hi bex, I haven’t read this series yet, Marie has been telling me to do it and I guess I should listen to her! Although, to be honest, the spinoff Night Huntress World series sounds more appealing to me than this one, I don’t usually go for series that follow the same couple on each book.

  6. Their books promise readers lust, romance, and compassion that will keep them coming back for more. Over the books of this series have experience the wide array of supernatural characters and a magic and mysterious world; with every new book we build more knowledge and expand this fictional world.
