In which I Use a Bunch of Arrows to Illustrate the Plot of K.A. Mitchell's No Souvenirs

No Souvenirs by K.A. Mitchell
It's the 3rd book in the series,
but stands alone perfectly well.
I just hit an unexpected —and unwelcome—reading slump, so I decided to re-read a few favorite books. No Souvenirs is a story I loved the first time I read it and that I've been meaning to revisit. The second time around was just as good, but with one pretty big exception: this book is drowning in sex.

A story filled with sex scenes isn't necessarily bad, and in this book many of those scenes were effective and necessary. The two main characters are very bad at communicating, so their relationship develops and grows through the sex. Not only that, but there's an attempt (not entirely successful) to use sex as a way to explore and reflect the power dynamics that take place outside of the bedroom. It is a good example of how in Erotic Romance the sex can, and should be, used to tell the story (or at least part of it). However, at one point I started skimming, because it soon became clear that every scene in the book was immediately followed by sex.

Basically, the book goes something like this:

And yes, I was too lazy to write a real review, so I spent 3 hours making this instead.

The fact that the two main characters didn't drown in a sea of blowjobs, speaks highly of just how interesting they were. And that, my friends, is big compliment.

Synopsis:
A vacation fling. No complications. No connections. And no regrets.
Trauma surgeon Jae Sun Kim has just lost the job he wanted more than anything else in his life. Looking for a way to hit the reset button, he takes a scuba vacation. He didn't plan on seasickness, or a dive master who is sex-on-the-beach personified.
Shane McCormack's tendency to drift away from complicated situations has landed him a job as a dive master in Belize, which isn't as glamorous as it sounds. But with the big three-oh looming, asking his parents to bail him out again isn't an option. The job isn't without its perks, though, and as soon as he figures a way to keep that hot but arrogant ass of a doctor from tossing his cookies over the side of the boat, he plans to flirt the control freak out of his brittle shell.
The close quarters on the ship generate more heat than either expects, but a vacation fling is all that's in the plans. An unexpected adventure leaves them changed in ways that make it impossible to go back to their old lives. The risks they'll both have to take could leave them with nothing but more scars, or the best souvenir of all.

  1. LOL Brie! Nice diagram. :)

I love this book and I can read about Scuba Cowboy and Jae Sun Kim having sex pretty much endlessly. I never skim with those two.

And even though I have read the book like 4 or more times, I still get all trembly when the life-threatening situation happens on the reef. It's one of my favouritest books.

    1. I just re-read Collision Course and found it way better than this one. Funny, because this used to be my favorite of the series. My taste has obviously changed ;-)

    2. I like them both but something about the reef and the "Open Water" think just gets me every time. I must read Regularly Scheduled Life again because that is my other favourite.

Have you read Bad Attitude yet?

    3. Is BA her new one? I haven't read it yet. I think the last one I read was Bad Boyfriend. I haven't even read the 4th Florida book.

  2. I love the diagram. What a great way to explain a book - it made me laugh out loud. It's also a great idea for a game. If you don't mind me stealing it, I'm going to work on some rules for my next book club meeting, and we can play Guess the Novel.

  3. The diagram is BRILLIANT! One of the most original reviews I've ever seen! I also love the fact that sex is used to actually advance or deepen the story. This is going to my TBR.

Blogger likes to eat comments, so I suggest copying it before hitting "publish" just in case it doesn't go through the first time. This is a pain, I know, but it's the only solution/prevision I can think of, and it will save you the frustration of losing a comment. Also, thanks for visiting!
